What’s a Super Lawyer?
Super Lawyers is a list made up of lawyers from across 70 areas of practice. Recognition from Super Lawyers is given to those lawyers who have achieved a high level of recognition from their peers as well as a high degree of professional achievement.
Super Lawyer selection process
The selection process to become a Super Lawyer is multi-phased and rigorous. The process starts with nominations. These nominations can’t be gained through campaigning or solicitation, but rather must come from the following sources:
- Peers
- Managing partner surveys
- Third-party feedback
- Super Lawyer research team
The lawyers who receive nominations to be Super Lawyers must embody the values of what it is to be a lawyer as well as do their job at the highest level of their ability.
After the nomination process, the Super Lawyer Selection Committee conducts independent research on the nominees. This committee utilizes a 12-piece criteria system to evaluate all nominees:
- Achievements
- Awards
- Bar activity
- Certifications/licenses
- Community service and pro bono cases
- Education
- Experience
- Law firm position
- Lawyers’ clients
- Lawyer verdicts
- Transactions
- Writings and scholarly lectures
Once the committee has conducted their research, the nominees who reach the highest level go through a peer evaluation process. All of the other lawyers who are considered for Super Lawyers, as well as other peers, evaluate the nominees.
This rigorous process not only allows those involved to voice their opinions on the nominees, but it also allows the judging committee to see how others feel about them.
In the final part of the selection process, lawyers are selected by the selection committee from small, medium and large firms.
Why Super Lawyers recognition matters
Attorneys who receive recognition as a Super Lawyer are considered the best of the best.
Why?
Because no more than 5 percent of the attorneys in any state are recognized as Super Lawyers. Additionally, only around 2.5 percent of attorneys make it to the Rising Stars list.
Being recognized as a Super Lawyer is a prestigious honor because it’s driven by peer nomination and not an arbitrary committee. Furthermore, in order to be qualified for nomination, an attorney must possess the desired characteristics, reputation and qualifications the committee looks for.
By requiring objective qualifications (like education and experience), it keeps the nomination process from being just a popularity contest.
